Stargirl By Jerry Spinelli Book Review

During this semester I read the book Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli. It was a very unique book with strange characters and story line but still pretty good if you like different and interesting kind of love stories.
Something I didn’t really like about this book was the plot. The plot in this story is about how a strange new girl named Stargirl steels the heart of a boy named Leo Borlock. He becomes very curious about her and tries learn more about her and figures her out. Eventually once he starts talking to her he ends up falling in love with her once they start hanging out. He likes learning more and more about her and all of the “different” things she does. They get closer and Leo notices the change in the way he’s treated once he starts hanging out with Stargirl all the time. He sometimes wishes she was normal and she tries to change for him. I didn’t like this plot that much because it was really weird because of how different Stargirl was so the love story part wasn’t really noticed as much. You were mainly thinking about how different Stargirl was. It wasn’t really what I imagined the story being like.
Another thing I didn’t like about this book were the characters. They were really different and not that realistic. One of the characters is Stargirl. Stargirl is a new student at Mica High and very strange. She is a very different and unique girl that isn’t really liked most of the time by the rest of the school. She has a very outgoing attitude and isn’t afraid to stand out. Yet at the same time she is very weird and mysterious. She has a pet rat she takes everywhere named cinnamon, caries a ukulele around and sings happy birthday to people when its there birthday and doesn’t miss one, cheers for both teams weather its her own school or another, and many more different things. Another character is the story is Leo. Leo is just a normal boy who goes to Mica high same as Stargirl. He is sometimes shy, timid, and can be very curious. I didn’t like the characters that much because they were so different it didn’t seem real. Also I thought it was going to be like a high school romance but it seemed to be more about how strange Stargirl is.
Something I did like about the book was the writing style because it was easy to understand. Everything the author was trying to say made sense. He was very specific and his writing was really detailed so i new exactly what he was talking about. The book probably would have been really confusing if he didn’t make it as detailed and clear as he did. It really helped me understand what was going on and who the characters were. He made it so the reader could really understand how different Stargirl was and Leo’s personality to.
Overall I personally didn’t really like the book that much because it was so strange and different but it wasn’t terrible it just wasn’t my style book. I would probably recommend this book to people who are looking for a different kind of book that has strange characters in it but at the same time looking for a romance novel.
